Patrick M. Garry’s book A Bridge Back is a quick read full of mystery, suspense and romance that will delight any reader who wants a trip into a real world fantasy. Hero Nate has left many loose ends in his life unresolved until a reporter reopens the tragic events that shaped his life. Then his boss insists that he return home to find out what the reporter knows as defense counsel for the future Attorney General for the United States.
Readers will find Nate’s hard work ethic attractive even while they find his emotional distance perplexing. They soon learn that Nate hasn’t allowed himself to become involved with any woman since the loss of his first love when both his parents and her father die and her mother is left paralyzed for life.
Set in a small town, with a nosy but extremely attractive motel operator, retiree’s will find the cast of characters pursuing leisure time activities such as sailing, dining out, and admiring the old hotel turned condominium that Nate’s grandfather used to own. Nate finds out that his sister and her husband are behind a deal to have the old hotel torn down and replaced. This is the hotel Nate help maintain and where he watched his grandfather clean chandeliers. It’s also the hotel where Nate’s grandfather’s best friend and lover lives. Can he ignore their plea for help?
Each step of the way, Nate is challenged in areas which he prefers to avoid but his heart and conscience doesn’t allow him to do so. He must face his former love and understand what he needs in a partner. He must resolve questions about how he feels for the members and former members of his family including his sister, grandfather and parents and the secrets they have hidden. He must face the meaning of work in his life including his father’s former partner in a law firm. And he has to find mercy in his heart for the man whose life was destroyed by a mistake he wasn’t able to avoid.
