When a Woman Prays

by Tina L. Miller, Obadiah Press, 607 N. Cleveland Street, Merrill, WI 54452 Published 2001 169 pages ISBN 0-9713266-1-4 www.obadiahpress.com 1-866-536-3167

With the publication of books such as The Prayer of Jabez and the Left Behind series, Christian publishing has stepped into mainstream bestseller lists. But these best-sellers are often written by well-known authors, preachers and teachers. Unfortunately, or maybe fortunately, Christian publishing companies often go for "name" authors who are renowned in the Christian community and whose theologies they can trust. This is good business. Why publish books by unknowns with no following? And why publish books with bad theology that might confuse "immature Christians?" But, at the same time many of these books seem hyped, geared by big names with big promises.

In response to this trend, many Christian writers who wish to share their insights or creativity with the world become self-publishers or start small companies of their own. Increasingly, every year many good books are being published by small presses, or by self-publishers. Many of these books are just just plain bad or controversial. But others are inspirational and enlightening, Such a book is When a Woman prays.

Many books try to teach New Christians how to pray. The problem is that very often they still are too complicated for the new Christian. They use jargon and make assumptions about the reader's knowledge or denomination. And very often these books are written by men. When a Woman Prays is one of the best books I've read on prayer in a long while. The author, Tina Miller, aims right at the heart of today's Christian woman. The book is a comprehensive but accessible primer on formal and informal prayer. Prayer is not shown to be merely for "emergencies" but as a way to a relationship with God. Miller writes about being honest with God, explaining that one can be real and sincere with God, even when praying for one's enemies and one's husband. Chapters include lessons, anecdotes and examples which help the new Christian learn how to trust God and develop a close relationship with God as Father and friend. In addition, she shows her readers how to grow in faith and how to receive answers to prayer. This little book covers every prayer topic that is appropriate for new Christians. It is a simple yet wise book which will benefit many, women's discussion groups and youth groups.
