What is RSS?

RSS is a format for syndicating news and the content of news-like sites. RSS files provide news updates from a website in a simple form for your computer. You read these files in a program called an aggregator, which collects news from various websites and provides it to you in a simple form. A growing number of web sites are adding an RSS "feed" to their site. Most of the time, you'll find the feed(s) by looking for a little button or link that says "XML", "RSS", or "Syndicate this site". An RSS "feed" is the website's way of alerting subscribers that the website has been updated. It feeds subscribers the latest updates that have occurred on the web site.

When you find an RSS feed for a site you like, you simply subscribe to the feed in order to be notified. You must have a tool that can read these RSS feeds. There are many different readers available, many of which are free.

Benefits to users

It allows you be notified when a web site has been updated instantly. Normally, you would have to proactively visit the site or subscribe to get email as updates occur. RSS alerts you without email. You just subscribe and notifications automatically appear in your news aggregator.

RSS is unspammable because you control your subscriptions- the site owner never has your contact info. RSS allows you to keep up to date with a range of news sources with a single tool.

Benefits to website owners

You can use RSS to get my headlines on your website (syndication). This is an excellent way to add original and rapidly targeted content, especially if your site caters to book lovers. To do so is very easy. You just put a line of code including my RSS page on your website and content is delivered automatically.

If you'd like to display my content on your web site, you'll need a script to fetch the content. RSS Fetcher is a free script that will fetch content, format it as HTML and store it in a file on your server. The content can then be displayed on your web site. Or you could try
rssfeedreader. This one is particularly simple as it doesn't involve downloading, or setting anything up at your website. You just sign up, and add an RSS link like http://www.compulsivereader.com/html/backend.php in at the place that says: "Or Enter Any other RSS URL". Once you do this the headlines should just appear with your own customisations like title and placement, etc.

RSS Readers

There are many readers, and quite a few are free. For a reasonably extensive up-to-date list, with detail on the differences between readers, visit: http://allrss.com/rssreaders.html
